Lara’s Journey by Joanna Pickering is a masterpiece. The play is deeply moving. We feel empathy for Lara—a brave and resilient female we can look up to.
The staged reading I attended was absolutely stunning. The author and actress impress the audience. We were captivated by the interior monologue of Lara, a Ukrainian young woman, who left her country, invaded by Russia, and is taken in by a family, but faces challenges in a new country. The play is so well written, so intense that we feel deep emotions. The story is universal and we cannot help identifying with the heroine. The psychology of the main character is complex. Lara is an endearing character but acts under the pressure of trauma.
Even though Joanna Pickering will not embody the role of Lara on stage for final productions (it is written for a Ukrainian actor, but her actor cannot leave USA for refugee visa delays)—her acting was heartfelt and outstanding. We have access to Lara’s thoughts: her quest for her true self and her desire to be free from judgement as a refugee. She feels gratitude towards the new family but she fights to be independent. She wants to be the master of her own destiny, and having studied medicine, she is a gifted academic with abilities that go unnoticed in her life as a refugee. Those who help her, despite showing great generosity and kindness, lack the true understanding of what a war refugee has endured.
As someone who has attended many plays at Avignon over the years, the performance I attended surpassed all other standard of plays. It was an unparalleled level far above the average: attending such an event was a rare privilege. This anticipated performance was beyond my expectations: it was so moving and the audience was so involved that I am grateful for this wonderful moment.
Joanna Pickering stayed to speak with her audience afterwards and took questions on her play and is a lovely person. Meeting her was an honour. She is definitely a wordsmith and a great playwright. The work impressed me—her wit, in her work and person, is exquisite. I look forward to going to London to see the play as a full production for its world premier.

Lara’s Journey de Joanna Pickering est un véritable chef-d’œuvre. Cette pièce est particulièrement émouvante. On ressent de l’empathie pour Lara, jeune femme courageuse et combative qui suscite l’admiration.
La lecture à laquelle j’ai assisté était absolument éblouissante. L’auteur et actrice impressionne l’auditoire. Nous étions captivés par le monologue intérieur de Lara, jeune Ukrainienne qui a quitté son pays, envahi par la Russie. Elle est recueillie par une famille mais doit faire face à plusieurs défis dans un nouveau pays. La pièce est si bien écrite, si intense qu’on éprouve beaucoup d’émotions. L’histoire est universelle et on ne peut s’empêcher de s’identifier à l’héroïne. La psychologie du personnage principal est complexe. Lara est un personnage attachant mais ses actes résultent du traumatisme qu’elle a vécu.
Même si Joanna Pickering n’incarnera pas le rôle de Lara sur scène dans la version définitive, ce rôle ayant été écrit pour une actrice ukrainienne qui ne peut quitter les États-Unis pour des question de visa qui s’éternisent, son jeu était d’une intensité exceptionnelle. Nous avons accès aux pensées de Lara : elle mène une quête pour trouver qui elle est réellement et exprime le désir de se libérer du jugement qui la cantonne au statut de réfugiée. Elle ressent de la gratitude envers la famille qui l’a recueillie mais elle lutte pour obtenir son indépendance. Elle veut être maître de sa destinée, et ayant fait des études de médecine, elle est une élève douée de capacités peu communes qui passent pourtant inaperçues dans sa vie de réfugiée. Ceux qui lui apportent du secours, en dépit de leur générosité et de leur gentillesse, n’ont pas la moindre idée de ce qu’a enduré une réfugiée de guerre.
Ayant vu de nombreuses pièces à Avignon pendant plusieurs années, je peux écrire que la représentation à laquelle j’ai assisté est un cran au-dessus de ce qui est proposé. C’est d’un niveau inégalé, d’une puissance sans équivalent : assister à un tel événement est un privilège rare. Cette représentation qu’il me tardait de voir est au-delà de tout ce que j’aurais pu imaginer : c’était si émouvant et l’auditoire était si émotionnellement impliqué que je tiens à exprimer ma reconnaissance pour ce merveilleux moment.
Joanna Pickering est restée discuter avec son public après la représentation et a répondu aux questions qu’on lui a posées. C’est une personne qui a beaucoup de charme. La rencontre fut un honneur. Joanna Pickering est indubitablement passée maître dans l’écriture et fait partie des plus grands dramaturges contemporains. Son travail m’a impressionné, son esprit, dans son œuvre et dans la vie, est exquis. J’ai hâte de me rendre à Londres pour voir la pièce dans sa version finale pour la première mondiale.
